Let me make it simple for you Dr. Watson. How do you spell Obama's first year>>>> MONEY SPENT, How do you spell Obama's second year>>>>> MONEY SPENT. Nearly 3.5 TRILLION DOLLARS of additional DEBT spending.

That list is laughable at best...

Ok as long as we are complaining. I was told there was going to be real change, when it came time to reform healthcare the "How" of getting that done was unclear and there was no real plan or original ideas. The rough outline of a plan was sent to congress and it was left to them and the healthcare lobbyists to write health care reform. The whole thing turned into a big mess...

The public option for health care never got done and without that the whole thing wasn't even worth doing. So now we have health care reform written by the health care lobby for the health insurance companies and pretty much everything that was supposed to happen hasn't.

sorry, frickin health care rant (who hasn't heard one of those).

That pretty much sums it up JJ. Our president is the king of contradictions. My disabled boyfriend with MS and congestive heart failure hasn't seen a doctor since Obama was elected. He's even turned away from emergency rooms now! Before that, he saw a doctor regularly. Go figure!

If voters would stop sending ANTI-HEALTHCARE Republicans to Congress, we'd have single payer, which is Medicare-for-all.

Otherwise, this is just the argument a drunk makes.

Honey, it's your fault I'm hungry and so drunk from not eating. You made the candlelight dinner too early when you KNEW .............

Some say it's time for the *chef* to invite better candidates who appreciate the meal, and commit to the dinner, candidates who say adios to the lobbyist-funded corporate-friendly HAPPY-HOURS.

Others say it's time to find a better *chef* who understands that the purpose isn't a healthy meal at all but is keeping the candidate drunk enough that he'll vote for what we say.

Obama understands drunks. He invites them to the table, even when they are full of it (lobbyist mind-altering perks) and believes that democracy is about all of us getting our dinner, no matter how inebriated some are. And that eventually, we all get healthier, and even sober up, if we get our balanced meals of healthcare and education.

But there will always be those who feel more comfortable in the bar, slapping each other on the back with bar-talk, feeling like big shots and buying another round from their hard-earned paycheck for the very lobbyist who keeps them poor.

story- We sent too many anti-health care democrats to congress too. The blue dog dems would not support it and the Senate took the public option off of the table before anybody even tried to pass it. The rest of the package was concessions written in by the health care industry.

Scott Brown was able to take Teddy Kennedy's seat because of the travesty Obama's fake environmentalist friends are causing in the North East. The PEW Charitable (Oil) Trusts and EDF lost the filibuster proof majority for the democrats because of greed and the agenda of killing jobs in a downturn regardless of the human cost.

Voters don't like that. Is that how to throw a healthcare fight or failure to govern well?

Politicians let us down sometimes no matter what party they are from.

mighty----Imagine you're leading the clean-up crew after a major downtown fire that destroyed 6 square blocks of buildings. The building developers were denied their choice of clean-up captain so they're stuck with you. There's a medical services complex owned by a powerful physicians group who demand first priority. A Catholic church with ownership ties to the Vatican. A RepubliCorps highrise that demands the city pay for a leveling out where they can rebuild bigger and more elaborate than before. Then there's the shopkeepers -- coffee shops, film stores, walk-up deli -- who need the most attention because of the shortest ability to rebound.

With an overwhelming task ahead of you, and your assigned territory in ruins, you take the special interest factor out of it and instead go for common interest -- getting the ashes swept away, repairing the areas first that will restore electricity and water no matter whose land it is. So NOBODY is happy because nobody got to be teachers pet.

Everything ... everything ... everything Obama does is gradual. I believe that's the case with healthcare. He got the door open, now the support is sturdier to fix it further, when we have less corporate puppets in our elected chamber seats.

The list was l--o--n--g for damage control. Sometimes it's about restoring basic utilities, and sometimes it's about just what is possible, what reinforcement will hold and not create even more new problems.

He has greatly disappointed me on the 2 things I cared the most about: (1) facing down the corporate stronghold (BP and all things related to oil disaster, including regulatory agency) and (2) Wikileaks handling by punishing the whistleblowers. I don't think people get sober until they stop drinking, so I'm not prone to compromise as a tactic.

One reason why he gets more done than I would. So I trust his timing, believing that like DADT it wasn't that he didn't want the fight or to change things, but he needs to use his limited resources in the best way to build strength underneath as he goes, and sometimes as in DADT the timing just shifts and it happens. The opposition is HUGE and very powerful. He must select weak spots for his slingshot attacks against their superior weaponry. I believe that is happening.

I'm certainly happier with that, disappointments and all, than I've been with any President since RFK was shot 40yrs ago.

I can see your point from an ideological point of view but from where I am standing this is...

Another war and oil presidency.

Corporate interests are served by presidential decree (like when he created ocean real estate).

Any action that favors the bottom 90 percent requires an act of congress and lots of political grandstanding.

Leaving all of the financial BS of who gets what service or paying which tax aside. This presidency has been the worst in history due to a relentless agenda to destroy small businesses in coastal areas and corporatize the ocean.

Obama and his wealthy supporters may feel that they are creating a utopia or just plain doing what is right but the ways that they are changing the coasts and ocean are not in the best interests of the people.

He is currently planning to appoint another EDF false environmentalist, oil representative to secretary of commerce.

Coastal residents will not be happy.

Name one candidate who has a better plan, and can see it through. Is that possible? Or is it something whose time has come? I don't know -- I'm asking.

war and oil

How does a President get us out of that grip when we elect congressmen who reinforce those dependencies, and fight the President at every level?

Don't we put the CNBC cameras in there and show voters what they're doing, as NO president has legal power to change that without becoming a dictator?

Isn't Obama doing the spotlighting? Think of 2yrs ago and how many people ever heard of the Koch Bros and how much of our govt they own.

Story- I don't know of any candidates right now. I am glad that the koch brothers are flushed from cover try not to let them distract you from the big green machine.

Pew Charitable Trusts, The Walton Foundation, The Packard Foundation, and all of the other wealthy foundations and trusts that are not just supporters of but pretty much write policy for the Obama administration.

PEW wrote the National Ocean Policy, you know what it says. Lease it to the highest bidder!! Guess who gets to write those leases ...PEW, guess who administers the rent money in a special fund ..PEW. Guess who will get most of that money... PEW supporters and scientists whose findings agree with the PEW agenda.

So go ahead and say, "Yeah but they are environmentalists." I would say that you are correct.

They are saving the environment, "So that it can be drilled for Oil and Gas."

You have been duped if you still believe that the Dems aren't sold out to these people.

Lkessler and Elaine ... Old-time slapstick comedy is famous for pie-in-face. I don't think that Mr. Obama yet realizes that the "joke" he pulled on Americans is about to backfire on him. The USA was fooled for just a brief moment in time, but we will recover and become stronger BECAUSE of his subterfuge and bold-faced lies.

He is the one who didn't understand the power of Americans' core beliefs in our republic. I almost feel sorry for this child -- liar, hides proof of schooling and US citizenship. But, I guess he's happy being a wannabe NBA basketball player and reality show personality.

SW Missouri, this article is my own list. I've been tracking his campaign promises mainly because the one thing he said that I was hopeful about was "going through the federal budget line item by line item and cut wasteful spending". I remember when he said it and I thought, "thank goodness he is going to do something about this! Things are getting out of control!" When that promise went out the window I checked his other campaign promises.

Of course everyone knows about most of them, like closing Gitmo etc. That's a campaign promise I did not agree with and I thought was dumb. Turns out...it was dumb. I also thought it was dumb to get rid of the Patriot Act and I wondered what the hell is he thinking. Looks like running for president and being president are two different things. He learned in office that the things he said in his campaign were naive.

It's probably too late in the primary campaign cycle for an unknown to successfully challenge the established frontrunners, who've already got their war chests lined up.

In order for an unknown like West to enter the competition, he'd have to come up with a whole lot of financial backing very quickly. That's really unlikely considering that this campaign is likely going to get close to the $1 billion per candidate mark, and large backers tend to shy away from unknowns and underdogs.

Allen West is not listed in your link Dennis and probably won't run although he should because he'd beat Obama, of this I have no doubt. In your link though, it's interesting that in the graph marked Republicans v. Obama, that GALLUP, whom I would consider the most reliable of those listed, has it as a tie.

As for Allen West being an unknown, I'm not to certain he's all that unknown anymore, he's shaking things up pretty well so far.

Elaine - I forgot to mention that our union leaders, especially the execs of the NJEA, are scathingly vocal about him. Imagine this .... he actually has the audacity to expect that teachers should be part of the accountability equation for students' progress and learning!

While I don't agree 100% with what he recommends on this topic, he makes very valid points. We shouldn't continue to pour millions into the school systems of Newark, Paterson, Passaic, Trenton, and Camden when healthy, non-disabled high school seniors somehow graduate but can only read at a 3rd grade level. These students also get multiple chances to pass watered-down versions of our HSPA.

Christie is a strong leader, unlike, well ......

Trump said he's not sure Obama was born in Hawaii. I'll have to find the quote.

Donald Trump learned the hard way this week that if you're going to call on the president to release his official birth certificate, you'd better do the same.
Trump, who has been putting pressure on Obama lately to make public his long-form birth certificate from Hawaii, decided to set a good example and release his own on Monday. Only problem was, the document that Trump provided to the conservative Website Newsmax wasn't his actual birth certificate, but rather a "hospital certificate of birth."
On Tuesday, Trump, who is contemplating a presidential run in 2012, sought to correct the oversight, providing a copy of his official birth certificate issued by the New York City Department of Health to ABC News.

During an interview with his grandmother a few years back she mentioned that he was born somewhere in Africa where she lives, she said she was there when he was born. This may be just a rumor but when you think about it the CIA and the FBI are quite adept at making false documents. Illegal immigrants get them all the time! And you can pay false witnesses to say anything, such as he was born in Hawaii. And have fake birth records implanted in the hospital's files. Not hard to do at all. I'm not saying any of this happened, but it is not impossible!

Terry----When I was a young adult I lived in the French Quarter, and I always credit that with honing certain skills. Like spotting when someone is trying to hustle me with a gimmick. I also noticed how easily some tourists suckered up to the conversation, and it was always what they paid attention to, not what was actually said.

In this case, we could go back-and-forth for the trillionth time on the internet about yes-he-was-no-he-wasn't. It's useless. The first observation I have is -- why would a person be so eager to believe the testimony of an unreliable source against a mountain of reliable documents?

In the French Quarter the sailors were eager to believe that strippers were innocent, sweet girls and the drinks were inexpensive. It was easy to see why they would be eager to be sucked in against reliable data -- such as, inexpensive is an arbitrary term -- when the motive was, ahem, pretty girls.

So why would one be so eager to believe the barker when it comes to Obama's birth records and upbringing? I believe Bush's records from Texas and Yale Univ, and his associations with Saudi royalty -- way more suspicious than anything Obama could even touch. But to keep the eye on the ball -- it isn't about their difference -- it's about that eagerness. That's what the hustler feeds on. And it's what you pass along when you take up with the hustlers.

(SWMM----Is that what you meant the other day -- not like everybody else -- ha! I just thought about that during edit mode!)

Let me make it a little easier to understand, do you understand what the words "possible scenario" mean? In my last posting I wrote it as a possible scenario of what could have happened because it cannot really be ruled out if it is actually possible. I work with a girl who is a staunch Obama supporter. She said that Obama has a certificate of live birth, which is different from a birth certificate which he would have had he been born in any American state. She said his grandmother said he was born in Kenya, but they got a certificate of live birth for him in Hawaii because American kids have to have either a birth certificate or a certificate of live birth for school and everything else growing up. The grandmother said Obama's mother told him he was born in Hawaii because she wanted him to believe it so he would fit in to the Hawaiian culture as a kid.

In my workmate's opinion, it doesn't matter where he was born. I honestly believe Obama doesn't know where he was born since he was told different things as a kid. I also believe he doesn't produce the 'birth certificate' because it is a 'certificate of live birth' which is slightly different, and he believes it doesn't change who he is as a person.

Hillary was losing in the polls, so she latched onto the Obama bandwagon.

Hawaii announced his birth the following day, news papers get their info from the hospital or city where the birth occurred.

That's funny, what made his birth so special that it made the newspapers? They didn't do that when I was born! Unless you're talking about someone saying they found his birth certificates. They could have been planted if they even existed at all. To me it all sounds very suspicious. If he would have had his birth certificates in the first place none of this controversy would have occurred. I still have my original copy. I tend to believe his grandmother was honest in saying that he was born in Kenya. All that aside, his sending our military into battle was a direct violation of presidential powers. An impeachable offense! Although I feel sorry for the Libyans, we should have let the coalition take care of business without us. We're stretched too thin as it is.

There were some congressmen and senators talking about impeachment but it got squelched, and you hardly hear anything about it anymore! Who is making everybody go silent? Am I the only one who sees what's going on?

I'm not that much into conspiracies but something smells rotten in Denmark!

Terry----Once again, there's that eagerness to be fooled. Honestly, look at your reasoning like it's in an essay you submitted to an English professor, or in law school.

    • On one side is the evidence and thick bibliography from sources such as the CIA, a multitude of government agencies responsible for *vetting* all high-ranking political leaders, Secret Service, who have access to all records. The birth announcement from Hawaii.
    • On the other side is gossip and opinion from unqualified sources.

#8.26 Thank you Elaine! I rest my case! So my scenario turned out accurate! ..... As I said before, I wouldn't post anything unless I knew there was some truth behind it.

Just how do you list this on your bibliography for the professor? Elaine's co-worker's opinion -- alphabetized under "s" for second-hand, "g" for gossip, "n" for I-know-it's-true-because-I-read-it-in-the-National-Enquirer?

That's funny, what made his birth so special that it made the newspapers? They didn't do that when I was born!

Now that is either deliberately disingenuous or you yourself were not born in the USA. All USA records are published, deaths, marriages, births, take a look at a few papers at random:

NewspaperARCHIVE.com, the largest historical newspaper database online, contains tens of millions of newspaper pages from 1759 to present. Every newspaper in the archive is fully searchable by keyword and date, making it easy for you to quickly find the birth or marriage news

    http://www.newspaperarchive.com/Births-Marriages/

So in this argument you're presenting, all you have proved is your eagerness to jump on hearsay and throw out what's been proven, repeatedly. Your professor will require a do-over.

I'm not going to speculate on what reasons -- and there are many (racism, conservative ideology, elite education resentment, childish prankishness, et.al.) -- but whatever reasons they belong personally to the deniers. We're all entitled to opinions. But as the man said -- NOT entitled to use them as facts, in circumstances where facts are used.

I hear whining on NV all the time:

You people just don't want to hear opinions except your own

but that's delusion on your part. You're entitled to opinions. You're not entitled to make up facts without proving them. An opinion would be whether he made a good decision. A fact would be what school he attended. Opinion -- fact. Without a basic understanding of that difference, as a Newsvine commenter, your posts hold little credibility for anything more than gossip.

The topic of Obama's birth certificate is speculation on everyone's part as to whether he was or wasn't born in Hawaii since no official birth certificate has ever been presented to put an end to the issue. A small portion of Americans absolutely believe he was born in Kenya since his grandmother said he was, and an equal number believe he was born in Hawaii because it was in the newspaper....but the majority of Americans haven't made an issue over it one way or the other and just accept that he was elected president and leave it at that. A 'certificate of live birth' is a legal document and because of that, it would have been in the newspaper just like all other legal document announcements are.

I tend to believe the same thing as my co-worker, and probably for the same reason as Donald Trump and others who say "just produce the damn thing and put an end to the speculation already!" Otherwise, why keep the speculation alive?

When the birther issue was first raised, I believed Obama was born in Hawaii and couldn't understand why people thought otherwise.....until the grandmother said he was born in Kenya. Now, I believe the grandmother because she was just being honest. She loved the kid and thought he was wonderful. She didn't think it was an issue either because he became an American, so in her view, so what that he was born in Kenya! I don't believe the grandmother was dottery or senile at all. I just think she didn't understand that her honesty was a good thing.....but it disqualifies him for the office of president of the United States if he was born in Kenya.

And now....the speculation continues all because the damn piece of paper won't be presented to end the issue. If Obama's original birth certificate is in Hawaii as Mulie says, then it is a very simple procedure to get a copy of it. If the original were ever lost, it's still easy to get a duplicate. My original birth certificate was lost too.....and I just sent in to get a copy and there it came in the mail. Easy breazy. In fact, Obama would have needed it his entire life like all the rest of us for going to school, getting a drivers license, getting married and a miriad of other legal reasons. However, a certificate of live birth would have sufficed in lieu of a birth certificate, and apparently, that is what he has.

I think the entire issue of the birth certificate could have been so easily resolved when he was elected since that's when the question was first raised. But the longer Obama doesn't present his birth certificate to put an end the speculation, the more people ask "what's up with that?"

Even I wonder what's up now and I usually don't care about stupid semantics. I care more about a person's character than I do about what pieces of paper they have. A person could have a masters degree in rocket science but if they are of poor character, I don't give a flip about their masters degree. Likewise, I never cared about the birth certificate of Obama because I was more interested in who he is as a person. But now....like Trump....I'm saying "just produce the damn thing already!" I hate all this speculation. Just put an end to it already. Sheesh!

I have a Kenyan Bith Certificate from one of McSpocky's seeds that had a Kenyan Birth Certificate Printer.

A good laugh is all the birther thing is good for. It's not real criticism because there is no evidence available to prove the claims of birth in another country. Whatever doubts one may have as to the veracity of documents presented, once vetted a sitting president is not going to be un-seated by anything short of proof of foreign birth.

Since the burden of proof is on the birthers and they have such thin evidence, I feel like I have already given the issue too much time.

Our president has a lot of faults that are worthy of discussion.

The one that concerns me the most is that his policy so closely resembles the president we just got rid of.

You're forgetting impeachment for violating the constitution. Which he violated. And the president can be removed! That's why we have a vice president!

If he had all of his proper documents, nobody would be in doubt as to his citizenship. I have not seen any documentation, nor any links from you guys proving the possibility wrong.

By calling people birthers is just another political rhetoric label to throw on people who don't agree with you. Good luck with that. I made my point but you have not shown any firm proof of his legality. All talk no action.

No person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any Person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty-five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States.

...What Liddy was referring to is actually an affidavit filed by a street preacher named Ron McRae, who conducted an interview with Sarah Obama, the second wife of President Obama's grandfather, through a translator. (Sarah Obama is not the president's biological grandmother, but he calls her "Granny Sarah.")

In that interview, Sarah Obama does in fact say at one point that she was there for her grandson's birth. But that was a mistake, a confusion in translation. As soon as a jubilant McRae began to press her for further details about her grandson being born in Kenya, the family realized the mistake and corrected him. And corrected him. And corrected him. (The audio is available for download here.)

No matter, though, because people who believe in a conspiracy theory simply hear what they want to hear. So some Birther sites have posted transcripts and YouTube clips that end abruptly with the mistranslation and don't include the corrections.

      http://www.salon.com/news/politics/war_room/2009/07/23/liddy?source=newsletter&utm_source=contactology&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Salon_Daily%2520Newsletter%2520%2528Not%2520Premium%2529_7_30_110

There is a link to the actual audio of the step-grandmother. The one in which this pseudo preacher states over-and-over that he wants to come see the birthplace in Kenya, and when the translation breaks down, she corrects what she's trying to say through the translator that he was born in Hawaii where his father was learning, but even then the interviewer kept insisting he was born in Kenya. The grandmother was being badgered and yet was able to clearly make her statement.

There was an eagerness by this interviewer to mis-represent the statement of this woman. As there is an eagerness by those who pass the distorted edited version as proof in a gossip fashion on Newsvine. The thing is -- even though she clearly and distinctly attests to his birthplace as Hawaii, no offense, but her recollections do not hold the credibility either way that the Hawaiian newspaper and hospital documentation offer, along with governor and all federal verifications.

There is also a clip of G. Gordon Liddy making a flimsy case for the gossip version, for anyone who might be interested in that, and the evidence against his claim.

The discrepancy does not lie with the evidence. The discrepancy lies with this eagerness to falsify his citizenship, and masks (or makes a weak attempt to) a motive that lies with the perpetuators of the controversy.

It doesn't help the president's case for legitimacy that he spends a fortune keeping the records hidden.

Why has President Obama spent more than $1,000,000 to prevent the release of his birth and college records?

      true analysis

      ...doesn't include disreputable sources.

      Critically Analyzing Information Sources

      INTRODUCTION

You can begin evaluating a physical information source (a book or an article for instance) even before you have the physical item in hand. Appraise a source by first examining the bibliographic citation. The bibliographic citation is the written description of a book, journal article, essay, or some other published material that appears in a catalog or index. Bibliographic citations characteristically have three main components: author, title, and publication information. These components can help you determine the usefulness of this source for your paper. (In the same way, you can appraise a Web site by examining the home page carefully.)

      I. INITIAL APPRAISAL

      A. Author

      1. What are the author's credentials--institutional affiliation (where he or she works), educational background, past writings, or experience? Is the book or article written on a topic in the author's area of expertise? You can use the various Who's Who publications for the U.S. and other countries and for specific subjects and the biographical information located in the publication itself to help determine the author's affiliation and credentials.
      2. Has your instructor mentioned this author? Have you seen the author's name cited in other sources or bibliographies? Respected authors are cited frequently by other scholars. For this reason, always note those names that appear in many different sources.
      3. Is the author associated with a reputable institution or organization? What are the basic values or goals of the organization or institution?

So...following your logic, I assume every link you see posted on NV for Daily KOS, the NY Times, TMZ and a miriad of other sources, you would have to dismiss out of hand without questioning whether the info is true or not. In fact, I can't imagine why you'd bother with the Vine at all since the entire site is people referencing other sites to have discussions about current topics! You could easily got lost in a quagmire of deceit.

And your entire #8.41 still doesn't prove whether Obama did or didn't pay lawyers to keep his birth and education records hidden. What if in fact he did? I can't decide if you'd want to know the truth or not.

story- I thought your link for vetting sources was kind of handy. I never studied journalism and have sometimes wondered why nobody takes anything I write very seriously even when I am breaking news that will not be in the mainstream for months.

Terry- All I said was you aren't going to unseat a sitting president with a bunch of doubts about his place of birth. Strong evidence is needed to get an impeachment preceeding started so unless Monica has another dress she hasn't told us about I think the whole thing is kind of moot.

As far as whether Obama was born in Hawaii or not I can't pretend to be remotely interested in finding the evidence one way or another because.....

I will not vote for him regardless of place of birth. I think his policy of corporatization, privatization, and globalization is not in the best interest of the people of the United States. The wealthy foundations and trusts that president Obama is subordinate to would change our nation to suit themselves in a manner that fails to recognize who we are or where we come from.

Interesting how? That a major, credible news source such as Salon, reporting an email exchange of the reporter's OWN written conversation, not true? That WND admits in said email that their publication prints stories which are not true!

Sort of like the drunk husband, "Who are you going to believe, me or your lying eyes?" OK let me rephrase that a little bit. We should stop sending billions of dollars in aid to those countries that sell us their oil! Their double dipping! The only way we can punish the oil companies is to buy electric cars. Drive less, carpool. If everybody in this country did that for one week the oil companies would have to lower the price of gasoline. We the people can do it! I drive my car maybe once a month. I use my motorcycle whenever possible.

A great example would be Guantanamo, after he was elected he tried to close it down, however since he isn't a dictator(regardless of what many on the right claim) he realized that it wasn't possible in the current political climate.
